先简单介绍一下自己的语言经历,我的老家是广东客家地区,母语是客家话,在读小学和初中的时候开始说广东话,到高中和大学的时候开始说普通话。在成年之后,基本就是和儿时的亲友说客家话,对方是珠三角地区的人就说广东话,对方是广东以外地区来的就说普通话,从来没有感觉不妥的地方,直到有些比较流行的电影被翻译成普通话。有好几次和广州土著人说起电影台词的时候,都有人愤愤说翻译的意思不到位。在同一种文字里面,互译的准确性尚且这么难,更何况不同文化背景和不同的语言。
再说英语,我从初一开始学英语,从初一到大学一直在坚持学,毕业后改行做了IT方面的工作,很多专业我都习惯看原版的,在有一次去美国出差的时候,一个美国工程师直接就说我说的英语是“书本英语”,他还解释说听我说英语就像看书一样。从那时候我意识到我们所学的英语,跟美国人在用语言表达的时候,并不是一样的。
我们用中文交流的时候,我们会用到大量的日常用语,由于相同文化背景的人,只要说话的人将句子说了前半句,我们就应该大概知道要表达的意思。刚来美国定居那几年,跟形形色色的普通居民聊天,总感觉到他们说的话里面有我听不懂的部分,我在表达自己的意思的时候,还是套用书本上学到的句法,能感觉到他们一直在我将整句话都听完了才恍然大悟的样子,看的出来,他们要非常认真的听,才有可能听懂我想要表达的部分意思。但他们当地人聊天,根本就是可以漫不经心的。这方面的内容,我有一些零散的笔记,希望通过发帖子整理出来和大家共享。
还有我们中文表达方式的问题,比如“1.春假”,“2.寒假”,“3.暑假”,“4.午休吃饭时间”,我在国内都直接翻成“1. Spring holiday", "2.Winter holiday" ,"3. Summer holiday", "4. Lunch time", 其实在美国都是带一个“Break”的表达,对应的是“1. Spring break", "2.Winter break" ,"3. Summer break", "4. Lunch break".
还比如中文里的“一群”,英语可以用的“A group/crowd of",但不贴切。 对于英语里面的“群”的描述,我个人感觉更像中文里面的量词。如头、匹、条等, 根据主语的变化用不同的词,非常有意思的。下面就转贴一些最常见的。作为今天这个帖子的结尾。 谢谢大家的阅读!
