形容词最高级表示一种性质的极端或最高程度。我们用最高级形容词来形容一组事物中一个事物的极端性质。当我们在名词前使用最高级形容词时，通常将其与 the 连用，这是因为我们谈论的东西只有一个或一组，例如：
She's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.她是我见过的最漂亮的女孩。
It's the best cafe in London.这是伦敦最好的咖啡馆。
John and Lisa are the most intelligent students here.约翰和丽莎是这里最聪明的学生。
Who is the fastest runner in the world?谁是世界上跑得最快的人？
Gloria owned the finest restaurant in the city.格洛丽亚拥有城里最好的餐馆。
Great Britain is one of the richest countries in the world.英国是世界上最富有的国家之一。
New York, London and Tokyo are some of the most expensive cities in the world.纽约、伦敦和东京是世界上最贵的城市之一。
David is the second tallest person in the family.
大卫是家里个子第二高的人。
Paul was the worst speller in the class.保罗是班上拼写最差的。
In my opinion, she is the worst actress in Hollywood.在我看来，她是好莱坞最差的女演员。
注意：从以上例句可以看出，形容词最高级前要用定冠词 the 的情形都是它们做前置定语（attributive）。
但是并不是有形容词最高级的地方都要跟 the 连用，以下几种情况，不用或可以省略定冠词 the：
一、当与事物本身做比较且最高级作表语时不用定冠词 the
1. 英国冬天最冷。
?: England is coldest in winter.?: England is the coldest in winter.
解析：该句比较的同一个事物是 England.
2. 当我们接到大订单时，我的老板非常慷慨。
?: My boss is most generous when we get a big order.?: My boss is the most generous when we get a big order.
解析：该句比较的是同一个事物 my boss.
3. 我在晚上工作状态最好。
?: I work best in the evening.?: I work the best in the evening.
解析：该句比较的是同一个事物 my work.
4. 试比较以下两个句子：
a. I'm most productive early in the morning.一大早我的工作效率最高。
b. I'm the most productive early in the morning.我是一大早工作效率最高的。
解析：句 a 表示我在一天中只有一大早的效率是最高的，而句 b 表示相比于其他人，在一天的一大早中我的工作效率是最高的。

二、形容词最高级前已经名词所有格或物主代词时不用定冠词 the，换句话说就是用名词所有格或物主代词代替 the

1. He's the best student.他是最好的学生。
He's my best student.
他是我最好的学生。
2. That's the most important goal.这是最重要的目标。
That's our most important goal.这是我们最重要的目标。
3. Maths is the hardest exam.数学是最难的考试。
Maths is Mark’s hardest exam.数学是马克最难的考试。
4. Pingtan is the fifth biggest island in China.平潭是中国第五大岛。
Pingtan is China's fifth biggest island.
平潭是中国第五大岛。
三、形容词最高级作表语（predicative）时有时可以省略定冠词 the，通常用于非正式的场合中
She is (the) most beautiful.她是最漂亮的。
This cafe is (the) best.这家咖啡馆是最好的。
John and Lisa are (the) most intelligent.约翰和丽莎是最聪明的。
This bowl is (the) biggest.这个碗是最大的。
London is (the) most depressing in January.伦敦一月份最令人沮丧。
