【原】material 和 materiel 相差一个字母，意思相差十万八千里

英语中存在很多的单词，它们拼写很接近，但是有时候彼此的意思却完全不同，比如 bare 和 bare，compliment 和 complement，discreet 和 discrete 等等，material 和 material 也不例外。

一、material 作名词，意为“布料，材料，原料，材料”，例如：
How much material will you need to make the skirt?
做这条裙子你需要多少布料？
I'm in the process of collecting material for an article that I'm writing.
我正在为我正在写的一篇文章收集素材。
Clay is a very plastic material.
粘土是一种可塑性很强的材料。
Uranium is a radioactive material.
铀是一种放射性物质。

material 作形容词，意为“物质的，客观存在的，重要的，必要的”，例如：

Material wealth never interested her.
物质财富从未使她感兴趣。
He cares more about job satisfaction than material things.
他更关心工作的满足感，而不是物质上的东西。
If you have any information that is material to the investigation, you should state it now

二、materiel 意为“军需品，军事器材”，只能作名词，例如：

The Minister for Defence and the Minister for Defence Materiel announced that the Government will buy a fleet of new vehicles.

记忆方法：与 material 中的字母 a 对应的 materiel 中的字母 e 代表 equipment，所以 materiel 意为“军事器材”。
