跟 awhile 和 a while 的区别类似，altogether 和 all together 意思很相近，但是用法不同。

一、altogether 作副词
1、意为”完全，全部“，表示强调，例如：
In 1997 the sales tax was lowered to 4%, then in 2001 it was abolished altogether.
1997年销售税降到4%，2001年又全部取消。
When Artie stopped calling altogether, Julie found a new man.
当阿蒂彻底不再上门后，朱莉又找了个男人。
2、意为”太，十分，非常“，用来弱化否定语气，例如：
Some of the professor’s lecture is altogether impossible to understand.
教授的一些讲座不能完全听懂。

We were not altogether sure that the comet would miss the Earth.
我们不能完全肯定彗星不会与地球相撞。
3、意为”总共，一共“，表示总数或总额，例如：
The book was ?13.50 and the magazine was ?5.25, so it was ?18.75 altogether.
这本书13.50欧元，杂志5.25欧元，所以总共18.75欧元。
Altogether, North American sales gained 3.3 percent to $2.66 billion.北美市场总销售额增长3.3%，达到26.6亿美元。

4、意为”总之，总而言之“，用来总结自己所表达的，相当于 all in all 或 on the whole，例如：
The food was good and we loved the music. Altogether it was a great evening.吃的不错，音乐我们也喜欢。总之，那天晚上过得非常愉快。
Altogether, we can say that our team couldn’t have gotten a better result.总而言之，我们可以说我们的团队没有比这更好的结果了。
二、all together 意为”一起“，强调的是一组或一个集体中的所有成员，可以简单地等同于 everything together 或 everyone together，例如：

Put your clothes all together in one pile and I’ll wash them for you.把你的衣服放在一堆，我给你洗。
解析：此句不能改为 put your clothes altogether in one pile，因为强调的是所有的衣服，是一个集体中的所有成员。
How much is it with material and labour all together? 连工带料，一共多少钱？
all 和 together 之间可以有其他成分，如动词或名词，例如：
I want you all to sing together.我要你们一起唱。
解析：此句等于 I want you to sing all together.
The soldiers all stood together waiting for the plane.士兵们站在一起等飞机。

三、两者的区别
altogether 是副词，是一个单词，它位置很灵活，可以放在句首、句中或句尾，强调完整或通盘考虑，而 all together 是比较松散的短语，all 和 together 之间可以有其他的成分，强调的是一组或是一个集体中的所有成员。
