toward 是一个介词，在它后面加一个”s“后成为 towards，它也是一个介词，这是一个比较少见的现象，它们的意思一样，而且在语法上可以通用，但是它们还是有点区别的。


一、towards/toward 作介词
1、意为”向，朝，对着“，例如：
The oil pollution is now moving towards/toward the shore, and could threaten beaches and wild life.石油污染正在向海岸移动，可能威胁海滩和野生动物。
She had her back towards/toward me.她背对着我。
2、意为”对，对于，关于“，例如：
She’s always been very friendly towards/toward me.她对我一向很友好。
It's the business of the individual to determine his own attitude towards/toward religion.对宗教持何种态度是个人的事情。

3、意为”趋向，接近，将近(完成某事)“，例如：
This is a first step towards/toward political union.
这是走向政治上联合的第一步。
The talks made little evident progress towards agreement.会谈在达成一致方面几乎没有取得明显进展。
4、意为”将近(某一时间)“，例如：
Towards/Toward the late afternoon I always get sleepy and can’t work so well.将近傍晚，我总是犯困，不能很好地工作。
The Channel tunnel was due to open towards/toward the end of 1993.海峡隧道预计 1993 年年底前开通。

二、两者的区别

在美国和加拿大，人们更倾向于用 toward，而在英国或澳大利亚，人们更喜欢用 towards，但是他们两者是可以互用的，你可以使用任何一个，需要注意的是，一旦在文中使用了其中一个，那么就请一直使用。
